Following a successful pilot in late 2024, Strathclyde Institute for Genealogical Studies are delighted to open registration for a new online professional development course: Effective Listening and Self-Care for Genealogists, starting in July 2025.
This course will be of particular interest to professional genealogists helping clients dealing with unexpected research results and/or challenging ancestral situations. Real life case studies will illustrate a range of situations and students will be able to discuss examples from their own practice.
What will you learn?
- Enhance your skills as an effective listener, a crucial element in building stronger client relationships.
- Learn about the importance of taking care of yourself when navigating challenging discoveries and managing difficult conversations with clients.
- Real life case studies will illustrate a range of situations and students will be able to discuss examples from their own practice.
- Hear from guest speaker Elise Bath, International Tracing Service Archive Team Manager at The Wiener Holocaust Library in London (week 2 & 4).
Student feedback from the pilot has been particularly positive. One participant commented:
‘This course was excellent, and it exceeded all my expectations. The tutors were fantastic, knowledgeable, and kind. Anyone considering a client-facing role as a genealogist should enrol on this course, as effective listening and self-care are essential skills for a professional researcher’.
Additional professional development courses are in the pipeline and will be piloted late summer. Sign up to our newsletter (link on website) to be the first to hear about upcoming events and learning opportunities.
The 5-week course fee is £170.00, and participants will receive a certificate of completion.
