“An Evening with Professor Sir Tom Devine”

As part of East Lothian Library Service Local History Centre’s 50^th Anniversary Celebrations, a special event entitled “An Evening with Professor Sir Tom Devine” will take place on Monday, 11^th May 2026 at 6.30 pm at the Haddington Corn Exchange.

Tickets cost £10 for adults and £6 for students and are available on the Brunton website: https://www.thebrunton.co.uk/whats-on/an-evening-with-professor-sir-tom-devine/. Alternatively, tickets could be purchase from the Brunton Box Office at: 0131 653 5245.

Tom Devine, Scotland’s pre-eminent historian and Emeritus Professor at Edinburgh University has very kindly agreed to be part of the celebrations and is keen to welcome heritage professionals at the event.

The event will be set up ‘cabaret style’ (8 people per round tables) so that audience members could purchase drinks at the bar and enjoy them during the talk. Tom will be interviewed about his career, his publications, and his view on various elements of Scottish and local history. There will also be an audience Q&A with Tom.

Kesley’s Book Store of Haddington will be selling some of Tom’s books as Tom is prepared to sign autographs. Audience members can also bring their own Tom Devine books to be signed.

I really do hope that this event would be of interest to the ASGRA professionals.

East Lothian Library Service Local History Centre 50th Anniversary Celebrations 1976 – 2026

The Association of Scottish Genealogists & Researchers in Archives will be participating in the 50^th Anniversary Celebrations of the East Lothian Library Service Local History Centre’s 50^th Anniversary Celebrations at the John Gray Centre, Haddington, East Lothian on the 20^th of April 2026 at 3:30 pm.

There will also be representatives from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission; Haddington’s History Society, Gullane & Dirleton History Society, Dunbar & District History Society, Musselburgh Conservation Society and the Co-Operative Society, along with two independent local heritage businesses – True North Stories and Vogel Ancestry.

SRS Research Fellow, Palaeography Teaching in Scotland Audit

As a long-established scholarly publishing society, the SRS has an interest in the teaching of palaeography skills. Whilst an unknown number of Higher Education (HE) and Heritage institutions in Scotland, e.g. archives, libraries, museums and other publishing societies, provide training and resources, there is no one format or standard for palaeography tuition. More importantly, good practice in one archive or classroom might not be known to others undertaking palaeography teaching, which reduces the impact of good practice. Indeed, if such palaeography skills and good practice are not consciously supported and encouraged, fewer people will undertake to learn such skills, which means fewer authors will be able to seek publication with a scholarly publishing society.

Job Description: SRS Research Fellow, Palaeography Teaching in Scotland Audit

The SRS Palaeography Teaching in Scotland Audit aims to gain an understanding of the range of teaching of palaeography in Scotland within universities, colleges, institutions and communities, and of the teaching tools and resources available to them, including online and published material.

Key aims

Understanding the sector – this discrete audit project is intended to help the SRS understand how critical palaeography skills are taught across Scotland, with select comparisons to elsewhere in the UK.
Quality Assurance and Enhancement – a published report and symposium stemming from the project will support best practice in teaching palaeography across the HE and Heritage sectors, both in Scotland and farther afield.
Networking – part of the audit project is to raise awareness of the work of the SRS, and to facilitate connections and sharing of practice between colleagues working in relevant fields.

SCOTTISH BASTARDS, Exploring the lives of Scotland’s illegitimate children through history

SCOTTISH BASTARDS, Exploring the lives of Scotland’s illegitimate children through history, written by Alex Wood, will be published later this month.

The book examines a subject which has intrigued me throughout my life and starts with my grandmother whose character was shaped by her illegitimacy. The book uncovers the often-overlooked stories of Scotland’s illegitimate children, including Keir Hardie, Ramsay MacDonald, Sir George McCrae and George Douglas Brown, and provides illuminating case-studies of many more individuals.

UPDATE: the Edinburgh launch of the book, SCOTTISH BASTARDS, Perceptions of Illegitimacy in Scotland, will take place at 6:00 pm, Thursday 20 November, in the Scottish Genealogy Society premises at 15 Victoria Terrace.

Engaging Talk on Sole Trader Accounting by Richard Forty

On Tuesday evening, ASGRA (Association of Scottish Genealogists and Researchers in Archives) members enjoyed an engaging and informative talk by fellow member Richard Forty on the topic of Accounting for Sole Traders.

Richard brought clarity and enthusiasm to what can often be seen as a complex area. His presentation covered essential topics such as bookkeeping for sole traders and tax responsibilities, all specifically tailored to genealogists and sole practitioners working in research and archival fields.

Understanding HMRC’s Making Tax Digital (MTD)

One particularly valuable part of Richard’s talk was his clear explanation of HMRC’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) initiative. He broke down what the new digital requirements mean for sole traders, particularly those who may not have yet transitioned to online accounting software.

Richard explained the core goals of MTD, which are to improve accuracy, reduce paper records, and simplify tax management, and outlined the steps sole traders need to take to comply. From choosing MTD-compatible software to understanding quarterly reporting obligations, his guidance helped demystify a topic that has caused concern for many small business owners.

For genealogists who manage their finances, this portion of the talk was especially timely and helpful.

The talk not only provided valuable insights into the finances of sole traders but also sparked a great discussion among attendees. Richard’s use of real-world examples and approachable style made the session both valuable and enjoyable.

New online CPD course for professional genealogists goes live!

Following a successful pilot in late 2024, Strathclyde Institute for Genealogical Studies are delighted to open registration for a new online professional development course: Effective Listening and Self-Care for Genealogists, starting in July 2025.

This course will be of particular interest to professional genealogists helping clients dealing with unexpected research results and/or challenging ancestral situations. Real life case studies will illustrate a range of situations and students will be able to discuss examples from their own practice.

Alex Wood, fundraising for Colostomy UK

ASGRA member Alex Wood will be running his 250th park run at Auldcathie, West Lothian, on Saturday, April 26. This is an incredible achievement for Alex, aged 74, who was diagnosed with cancer 13 years ago and required a colostomy procedure due to his illness. His recovery took several months, during which time he used fitness and exercise to aid his progress in regaining his health.

Alex is fundraising for Colostomy UK to help them fund their vital services, raise awareness, and curb the stigma surrounding the procedure.

ASGRA AGM 7 February 2025

ASGRA had a productive and successful AGM on the 7th of February, 2025. We hosted this as a hybrid meeting in person at the Augustine Church, 41 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh and via Zoom, which was a great way to ensure broader participation. ASGRA would like to thank all members who participated and offer a special thank you to our Patron, Dr Joseph J Morrow, Lord Lyon King of Arms.

ASGRA would like to welcome Sarah Smith, who joins us as an Ordinary Council Member, and Ian Marson, who will take on the Treasurer role. Janet Bishop, Shirley Obrzud, and Lorna Kinnaird continue in their positions, ensuring continuity and experience on the Council.
